Barry Keoghan has opened up about his role as a father.

He is the proud dad of Brando, who shares with his ex-partner Alyson Sandro.

Barry has opened up about parenthood in recent interviews and most recently discussed tackling his own issues before being able to “step up” as a dad.

Speaking to HELLO! Magazine, he admitted: “When you make a decision to step up and get on with it, you understand that you need to do stuff like therapy to grow, and to be honest with yourself about certain things.

“That’s one of the reasons I’m starting to enjoy life and having a lovely relationship with my little boy. Getting to see him grow gives me such love and hope. He’s starting to talk now and give backchat.”

He also discussed how his own childhood influences not only how he parents but also how he conducts himself as an actor.

Barry’s mother sadly passed away when he was 12 and he was raised by granny, his auntie and his cousin.

“[I] learned my principles and to lift the toilet seat up. My granny was like a father figure and a mother figure for me – better than any man. And she’s tough as nails.

“So I do gravitate towards female filmmakers because I’m allowed to be a bit more vulnerable. It’s not a conscious thing.”

Barry spoke out previously on Louis Theroux’s podcast, where he defended himself saying: “I’m not a deadbeat father.”

“People love to use my son as ammunition or whatever. And it kind of leads me to stop, the more attention I’ve got lately and the more in the public I’ve become, the less I’ve posted about my child, because I don’t think it’s fair to put my child online.”

Barry went on to say that since he’s refrained from sharing his son on social media, people have made up a narrative about how he’s a “deadbeat” dad.

“Just the audacity of some people, man. It sickens me, makes me furious,” he added.

“I’m just trying to make a living, trying to get a good body of work and create safety for my child.”
