The Dublin Marathon has been cancelled for the second year in a row

Disappointing news for runners out there this week as The Dublin Marathon has been cancelled for the second year in a row. The event is always a huge date in the Irish sporting calendar and usually takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend.

As the marathon involves thousands of participants, as well as onlookers, the organisers revealed they could not guarantee everyone’s safety with the pandemic still ongoing.

Announcing the news in a statement they said; “It is with great regret that we are cancelling the KBC Dublin Marathon for the second year in a row. We have a duty of care to you, the participants, our volunteers, suppliers and supporters.”

Continuing, they revealed; “Despite vigorous evaluations, there are still too many unknowns to be confident that we could provide a safe event given the pure scale of the marathon; 26.2 miles with 25,000 runners and 200,000 supporters who line the streets to cheer you on.”

“We know the cancellation is incredibly disappointing news, and we want to thank you for your continued support.”

However, anyone who had purchased an entry for the 2021 event will be able to get a refund or carry over their ticket until next year. Now you have no excuse not to get training!

You can also still take part in the event virtually, just head to kbcdublinmarathon.ie for more information.
