Spencer Matthews has opened up about his journey to sobriety.
The former reality star is married to Ireland’s own Vogue Williams and has admitted that he could have lost her due to his drinking.
He discussed his “excessive daily drinking” with Vogue and admitted the moment that he knew it was time to cut alcohol out of his life.
Speaking to Vogue on Boots’ Taboo Talk podcast, he stated: “It’s not like I just fancied giving up drinking.
“I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died — not to be overly dramatic about it, but that’s the way it was heading.”
He explained that he realised he needed to stop drinking after he struggled to get to bed alone after he had drank an entire bottle of whiskey.
“I was alone, I had a bottle of whiskey and struggled to get myself to bed. I remember waking up the next day and thought, ‘I don’t need this in my life.’.”
He went on to praise his wife Vogue who has a “great” relationship with alcohol as she really helped him to get a handle on his drinking.
“If I wasn’t married to someone who didn’t have a great relationship with alcohol, as in you don’t really like it, then my journey would have been more difficult,” he confessed.
He went on to say that he is sober “most of the time now”, adding: “I’ve gone from problem drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly. I no longer see it as a problem. I have great balance in my life.”
