We caught up with Una Healy to chat about the songs that made her.
Una, how are you keeping?
I’m really well, thank you!
You’re returning to the stage soon with an upcoming gig alongside Luke Thomas, tell us about that.
I did a show with Luke in the Sugar Club just before Christmas and it went down really well so we have decided to team up again for a show as part of the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival in October. I’m really excited to work with him again. Luke’s such a great performer and really knows how to get the crowd going, so it’ll be fun.
What else is going on with you music wise?
I’ve been in the studio writing some new music and I’ve also been working on really exciting cover versions of some well known songs.
Besides your own music, what songs are on repeat at the moment?
I am listening to lots of old jazz songs, but also feeling very nostalgic so I’m listening to a lot of 80s and 90s playlists too.
What’s your ultimate feel-good track?
Man, I Feel Like a Woman is one of my favourite songs to perform on stage and in general. I was lucky enough to meet Shania Twain briefly last September backstage at the 3Arena and was so chuffed as when we were having a photo taken, she told me I smelled really nice! [laughs]
Growing up what did you listen to?
As a child, I listened to a lot of pop music like Madonna and Kylie. I also loved singer/songwriters like Damien Rice, Norah Jones and Alanis Morissette. Not many people know it but I am obsessed with dance music. When I was a teen, I had all the dance compilation albums and I am having DJ lessons at the moment which I really enjoy.
Which artist or band do you admire most?
My uncle Declan is a huge inspiration to me. He has been a musical mentor for me since I started writing songs at the age of 12. I hope to do more work with him in the near future!
What’s your favourite album of all time?
Sheryl Crow’s self titled album. I bought it when I was 15 and it really inspired me to write my own.
What’s been your favourite gig you’ve played and why?
Probably when The Saturdays played in my hometown of Thurles back in 2012! I was so happy to have the girls with me and to play to the home crowd was really special.
When you look to the future, where do you see yourself musically?
I hope to be like my Uncle Declan in my 60s and still rocking it!
