Sinead O’Connor shares kind words to son Shane’s dad as they prepare to attend his funeral

Sinead O’Connor and his son’s father, Dónal Lunny will be the only two people in attendance at son Shane’s funeral, as per his request.

Sinead and Dónal’s son died this month after he went missing from care. Since then, singer Sinead has been attempting to pick up the pieces of her son’s heartbreaking passing, thanking her ex-partner Dónal in the process.

Posting to Twitter Sinead thanks multiple people who played a big part in her son’s life, including his Dad. She said:

“I’d like to thank Shane’s father, Dónal Lunny. You did your best too, Dónal. And Shane adored you. And I will always remember how sweet you have been to him. You have been a lovely father. I am so sorry for your loss.”

Sharing details of her son’s upcoming funeral and his wishes to only have his parents present at the ceremony, Sinead said:

“Fyi. Shane was Hindu. So the funeral will be just his mother and father. This was also the wish Shane expressed in his suicide notes. If you’re going to send anything to the mortuary at Loughlinstown hospital pls send flowers or Hindu objects. Shane O’Connor”

Sinead’s son Shane was in the care of Child and Family Agency Tusla, which Sinead previously shared her thoughts on their part they and CAMHS played in her son’s tragic passing. Since then, Sinead has issued an apology to both agencies, sharing that she understands the immense pressure services in Ireland are under.

Instead, Sinead tweeted that Ireland is a ‘third world country’ with limited resources for those who need help, like her son.

“Ok, I’m gonna do the right thing here and apologise for my lashing out. Tusla are working with very limited resources. They loved shane. They are broken hearted. They are human. I am sorry I have upset them. We are a third world country. It’s not their fault.”

“The issue is.. we are a third world country. We have 12 beds in special care for suicidal teenagers. And no resources to save those who can’t manage life. 128 icu beds in the whole Country. Tusla did their best. We all did: and I am deeply sorry to have blamed anyone.”

Our thoughts are with Sinead and family at this difficult time.
