It’s back to school for the cast of Derry Girls!
The actors are reuniting as they begin to film the third and final season of the show and leading lady Saoirse-Monica Jackson just posted a cute picture with her on-screen dad and grandad played by Tommy Tiernan and Ian McElhinney.
Captioning the snap Saoirse-Monica wrote, “Ladies & Gentlemen, I present to you Ireland’s Eurovision Entry 22”, reminding us of their amazing comedic chemistry which has us so looking forward to the new season.
Fans of Derry Girls recently received some bad news as Lisa McGee, the creator of the show revealed that season three is the final season of the show.
Lisa explained that “it was always the plan to say goodbye” after three seasons.
“Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me,” she added.
She went on to say that perhaps the characters would return in some capacity so here’s hoping we get a movie in the near future.
“Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guises someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.”
As they begin the new season, not all cast members are able to be there. Nicola Coughlan, who plays Claire in the show has found success in her current role in the Netflix hit Bridgerton and is filming season two of that in the UK.
The actress reassured fans that she will not be missing from the upcoming series and will be back as soon as she’s finished with her newsletters as Penelope Featherington.
She explained the rest of the cast will film any scenes she’s not in while she’s away.
She said, “So Derry Girls will start filming anything I’m not in first while I finish filming Bridgerton, the moment I wrap I’ll take of the corset and get back into the green uniform.”
Very quick turn around for two very different character’s but there’s no better woman for the job.
We can’t wait to see Nicola reprise her role in both series’ for all the goss in Bridgerton and for the lol’s in Derry Girls, as well as just seeing the Derry Girls cast back together after their individual successes.
We can expect to see the new series on our screens in 2022, it can’t come quick enough!
