Ruth Negga has opened up about the possibility of being nominated for an Oscar for her role in Loving.
Last month it was revealed that the Irish-Ethiopian actress was a favourite to be nominated in the Best Actress category for her impressive performance of Mildred Loving in her latest movie.
Loving tells the story of an interracial couple who are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married -which is prohibited under Virginian law. Ruth plays the leading role of Mildred, a determined, strong character who is intent on challenging this law. The Irish actress has been hailed by critics for her outstanding performance after the movie’s premiere at Cannes Film Festival and many have tipped her for an Oscar nomination.
Ruth has admitted she is “flattered’ to hear all the hype surrounding her role in Loving, as the story is very special to her.
“It’s terribly exciting, it’s very flattering to hear people talk about a performance that you’ve loved (and) invested in,” she told Ryan Tubridy on last night’s Late Late Show.
“It’s very special to me. Mildred and Richard Loving are extremely special people to me. It’s flattering for me personally, it’s flattering for everybody in our film, it’s also amazing because it feels like this couple who have sort of been forgotten and neglected, that people will hopefully know them and become familiar with them.
“The universal theme is love and to respect one another.”
We think Ruth would definitely be a worthy nominee!
