Record number of women directors nominated for IFTAs

It’s that time of year again when we celebrate incredible Irish talent in the arts.

Last year was all about Kneecap, but this year we’ve moved to Cork as Christy leading the film categories with 14 nominations, quickly followed by Roy Keane film Saipan with 12 noms.

Also leading the film charges are Blue Moon with eight, Four Mothers with seven and Irish-language feature Aontas with six.

Jessie Buckley, who has been tipped for Oscar glory, has, of course, been nominated alongside her Hamnet co-star Paul Mescal.

As for the television categories, Blue Lights (Season 3), Trespasses, The Walsh Sisters, Wednesday (Season 2), Leonard and Hungry Paul, and The Young Offenders (Season 4) are all up for nominations.

This year sees seven first-time IFTA nominees, including Daniel Power, Emma Willis and Jamie Forde (Christy), Cal O’Driscoll (Video Nasty), Louisa Harland (The Walsh Sisters), Eleanor O’Brien (Báite) and Katherine Devlin (Blue Lights).

There is a record number of women nominated in directing categories at this year’s Awards, including Drama directors Rachel Carey (Obituary), Megan K Fox (Video Nasty), Oonagh Kearney (The Au Pair), Mia Mullarkey (Hidden Assets), Aisling Walsh (Showkids), debut feature director Myrid Carten (A Want in Her); as well as Lisa Barros D’Sa, who co-directed Saipan with Glenn Leyburn.

How incredible.

Winners will be announced at the 23rd IFTA Awards Ceremony on Friday, 20th February at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, hosted for a second year by comedian, actor and broadcaster Kevin McGahern.
