RTE New Season Launch 2017

Ireland’s best-known architect Dermot Bannon is putting his own home up for sale.

The Room to Improve star is moving on from his Drumcondra home, and it’s on the market for €649,000.

The simple and spacious 1920’s home has three bedrooms and one bathroom and is said to be in “impeccable condition”.

Listed on property site DNG, the house is said to have been “Well cared for and enhanced to exacting standards by its current owners.”

It added: “The bright and well-proportioned accommodation has many lovely features that include: high ceilings, original solid wood flooring, Scandinavian pine windows, original cast iron fireplaces, picture rails, teak doors and many more.”

“Beyond the elevated front garden an entrance hallway leads to a comfortable sitting room opening to the modern open plan kitchen/dining area. There is a utility area and guest bathroom on this level.”

If you were expecting an open plan mansion full of water features and huge windows, Dermot recently explained to VIP Magazine that “Cobblers shoes are always the worst.”

He explained: “My son the other day said to me, ‘Dad you can’t be a celebrity’. And I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Look at our house!’ So, yeah cobbler’s shoes…I keep pushing it further and further down the line because when I go home it’s the last thing I want to think about. I just want to sit on the couch and think about nothing.”

Dermot also gave VIP Magazine an insight into what his dream house would be.

“It would have to be near the sea and because I love cooking, the kitchen would have to be the centre of the home. I think I would actually have one central living space with snugs and pods off it.

He added: “I’d have water – not water features – but water jets and a big bath overlooking the sea. I’m a bit if a hoarder and tend to collect clutter, so I’d want storage compartments for everything. I’d love a studio to paint and draw. I’d need a big fire in the middle of the house that can be seen from everywhere.

“It’s not about rooms for me, I’d like to be able to bring my dinner anywhere because your mood changes and some days you want to open all the doors and let the light in, some days you want to curl up on the couch with a duvet. To me, the home is all about the senses so for me it would the ‘Feeling House’.”

So perhaps he’s on the market for something near the sea?
