Paul Smith apologises to Hughie Maughan after tense encounter on First Dates Ireland

Paul Smith has apologised to Hughie Maughan after their incredibly tense encounter on First Dates Ireland.

The pair appeared on the latest episode of the show, but things certainly didn’t go well for them throughout the course of the evening.

Despite Hughie’s best efforts to engage in conversation, Paul appeared uninterested and viewers slammed him for his ‘ necessarily rude’ behaviour.

“I should have handled it better. Unfortunately for me, I’m a very direct person. I speak with my face and eyes,” he told Adrian Kennedy on 98FM’s Dublin Talks.

“We were filming for two to three hours, and there was a lot of stuff that could have been shown like giving him some advice on his feelings about his ex, and we spoke about that afterwards with the producers, as well.”

He continued, “I do admit that’s how I was; I’ll put my hands up, I was dismissive, and I could have made more of an effort.

“But when I went in, my back was already up, because they hadn’t listened to anything I’d said, and they didn’t tell me he was someone with a profile in Ireland, because the backlash from people, some who are fans of him, has been pretty extreme.”

Hughie himself noticed the awkward mood throughout their evening together, but tried to make the most out of the situation.

In the end, he realised it wasn’t worth it and called for the bill before they went their separate ways.

“I tried to have a chat with him and ask him questions but I just didn’t feel it back from him,” Hughie said on the RTE show.

“I think he came across a bit rude but that doesn’t mean he’s rude as a person. I just think he didn’t like me and I didn’t like him.”
