Muireann O’Connell has revealed why she has no desire to become a mother.
The Today FM radio show host explained that she just “never kind of felt the want.”
In an interview with TV Now Magazine, Muireann discussed how she didn’t realise there was a pressure to have kids when she was younger, and that people now automatically assume she will be.
“I didn’t know when I was younger that sometimes it’s expected for women to have children. As I got older, people would say ‘someday, when you’re a mother’ but it’s just not something that ever really entered my mind, that I would have children, because it was a very adult thing to do and then as I became an adult, and my friends started having children – and I get it a lot all the time ‘oh it will be different when you have a child’; ‘when you have a child you’ll have to change your life’ – and no I don’t want children.
“It’s not something that I ever wanted.”
Muireann, who is “seeing someone” explained that she loves being around children, but is not interested in having her own.
“I just don’t think it’s for me. I love children, I love being around kids, I love babysitting but I think there are some people in this world who it’s not for. And it’s not just for these reasons; we are facing a massive overpopulation crisis in this world, and if some people don’t want to have kids they don’t want to have kids.”
The 6 O’Clock show presenter also explained that being a parent is a huge responsibility.
“I mightn’t even be able to have children, I don’t know but certainly, the desire isn’t there. And then when I do see my friends, and see what they have to do, and when you think of the gravity of having children; you’re responsible for another human being and how they act and what they do and how they are perceived by the outside world. Like, my god that is crazy, it’s absolutely crazy”
