RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan has shared that her husband, Steve Carson went through a lot of effort to make their relationship work.
With geographical barriers in their way, but undeterred nonetheless, Miriam and Steve both worked on BBC’s current affairs programme Newsnight together. However, family obligations meant that Miriam had to pack up and come back home to care for her then-ill sister.
“In the case of Steve and I, I am so glad that he has his glorious career now, because when I first met him, I came back to Ireland, my sister got ill, and I stayed here,” she told RTE Guide.
Soon after, Steve made the difficult decision to pack up his job in the BBC and move to Dublin to be with her and her children.
“He had come over because I had tiny kids from my first marriage… I was separated. So, he gave up his job at the time.”
The move however turned out to be a good one, as it didn’t hold Steve back in his career progression. He is now Director General of BBC Scotland.
Speaking about his current role and how happy it makes her, Miriam added: “For me, it is just a beautiful circle of love and he is now probably in as senior a role as he would have been if we had stayed in the BBC.”
“I want him to have his career. If I had said, ‘I don’t want this,’ there is no way he would have done it, so I am delighted for him and I am happy.”
Sadly, now this means that she and Steve are managing a long-distance relationship again, but she says you simply can’t have it all.
“I don’t know anyone who has it all, and anyone who says that they have it all, I don’t know what they are talking about. I am constantly chasing my tail”
