Microblading: what exactly is it and how does it look? VIP found out!

We visited Elysian Brows on Dublin's South William Street to try out the semi-permanent eyebrow tattoo

Like most other women, I completely over-plucked my eyebrows as a teen, leaving them gappy and sparse; not ideal in today’s world when thick, full brows are what’s en vogue. Yes, we have an array of products at our disposal to help us fill them in, but it’s a time-consuming process each morning. Enter the wonder that is microblading, a form of semi-permanent tattoo where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool. I met with Elysian Brows & Beauty‘s Maura Healy, a top brow artist and microblading specialist, who listened to my concerns surrounding the ‘scouse brow look’, and assured me that instead, she would draw hair-like strokes to mimic my own.

Following our consultation, I returned to the salon where a gentle numbing solution was placed on my brows, to reduce any pain throughout the procedure. Although I was apprehensive about it, the scratching sensation was totally bearable, and the results were worth every wince. I was a little in awe of my brows directly afterwards, and how Maura had managed to make them look so full, but natural.

After the procedure, it’s important to note that there’s a level of aftercare involved; don’t get them wet, or pick at them and be aware that they will change over the recovery period. From day 2-4, the brows become a few shades darker, and from day 5-12 they will begin to flake as the scab that has formed begins to peel away – don’t panic as it’s totally normal!

In fact, a second appointment is vital to complete the microblading process, and a top up after 4-6 weeks will tighten up your shape and touch up any light spots. Depending on individual requirements, you may need an additional third session, but two is usually enough. Overall, if you’re looking for a long-term solution for your brow woes (it lasts 18-24 months!), microblading is exactly what you’re looking for and is worth every cent.
