Michael Fassbender was nominated for a coveted Oscar yesterday for his starring role in Steve Jobs, but it turns out that it might never have happened, if things had gone according to plan.
The Irish actor had a busy 2015 filming movies such as Macbeth and Slow West, and he was looking forward to taking a step back from acting to enjoy some relaxation time before he was offered the title role in Steve Jobs. It turned out to be an offer he simply couldn’t refuse.
“I was [hoping] to take a break, when Steve Jobs landed on my lap.I just couldn’t not do that. It was such a rare opportunity, so it just sort of went that way”, he told the Irish Mirror.
In the film, directed by Danny Boyle, the 38-year-old portrayed the Apple boss very convincingly. So much so that it secured him an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category. What an opportunity he could have missed!
The Kerry native now hopes to take six months off once filming ends for his the highly awaited blockbusters: Assassin’s Creed, The Snowman and The Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant. That will be a well deserved break!
On Thursday it was announced that the Irish star will be in good company battling it out at next months Oscars with Leonardo DiCaprio, Eddie Redmayne, Matt Damon, and Bryan Cranston all in the Best Actor category. The star was previously nominated in 2013 for his role in 12 Years a Slave.
Other Irish nominees are Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress her role in Brooklyn, Lenny Abrahamson for Best Director of Room, and Emma Donahue for Best Adapted Screenplay of Room also. We wish them all the best of luck!
