It’s easy to agree that here in Ireland we are all very fond of our President, Michael D Higgins, also known as Miggeldy. However it’s not just our short statured President the country is fond of, but his two dogs, Síoda and Bród frequently steal the show.
The huge Bernese Mountain dogs are always in attendance when the President greets state guests and dignitaries and can also sometimes be spotted at Áras an Uachtaráin if you’re walking through the Phoenix Park.

However, sadly Michael D has shared that one of his beloved dogs, Síoda has passed away following a “short illness.” The news was revealed in the President’s online newsletter in a short announcement alongside a picture; “Síoda has passed away, after a short illness.”
The two doggos are well loved by the Irish nation and there have been outpourings of sadness on Twitter after the news was announced.
Sad note at the end of the latest @PresidentIRL email newsletter.

Just read that Ireland’s favourite dog Síoda has passed away after a brief illness. This is so sad. Them two were inseparable, even during many official engagements. This is my favourite photo of them.
Sending my thoughts & prayers to our President & his family. @PresidentIRL pic.twitter.com/G1mpBbP2Bs

I support the motion that there should be a statue of Síoda in Phoenix Park so everyone will get a chance to pet her #RIPSioda

I think they should have delayed the Síoda announcement in the national interest. Really didn’t need hat today. Poor Bród. Poor Michael D. Poor everybody. RIP Síoda. The nation’s best friend.
