Boxing legend Muhammad Ali had a strong Irish heritage and was extremely proud of it – so much so, he visited the country both in 1972, and 2009 to see the land where he hailed from.
It was reportedly a life long ambition of the icon to see Ireland, a goal which he was sure to achieve.
The boxing champion’s great-grandfather, Abe Grady, was from Ennis in Co. Clare but emigrated to America in 1860, later marrying an African-American woman.
During his visit seven years ago, Muhammad Ali was given the first ever Honorary Freeman of Ennis, and was touched by the warm welcome he received.
Speaking at the time, Ali’s wife Yolanda said that the champ was overwhelmed by the crowd.
“I have never seen anything like this before and neither has he. He was overwhelmed by it, really ecstatic.”
She also revealed that the couple planned on returning to Ireland, despite doctors advice against travelling.
“It was better than any medicine you could give him. He was excited and surprised by the outpouring of people, even the children who were out in the street. It was wonderful.”
Tributes from Irish stars have been pouring in since the death of the boxing legend.
Rest in peace Muhammad Ali.
