While she confesses she was able to “laugh it off”, she says that appearing on the dance show has really improved her confidence.
Speaking to VIP Magazine, she admits that before joining the show she had her own self-doubts.
“I needed to get out of my head. I deserve to be here,” she says as she discusses her growing confidence.
“Just because I’m not a size eight and can’t be flung around the room easily, I still deserve it. Going into it I did doubt myself a bit because of my body dysmorphia and my body issues. I didn’t think I looked like a dancer.”
Her mindset has really changed over the last three months as she has taken part in the show.
“I have seen physical changes in my body in terms of my strength. I am changing my mindset around my body and sprinkling positivity in there,” she adds.
She goes on to say: “It’s changed my idea of my body and what it can do. In terms of my costumes, I would never, ever wear costumes that weren’t long-sleeved. I was really weird about it.
“I didn’t want my arms out. But the costume department, they make amazing costumes. They keep telling me that I can it because it’s literally made for my body. It can’t look bad!
“I’ve done it about three times now. And it is scary. But when I look at pictures I try not to look at that one negative thing, I need to get out of my head. It’s helped me think a bit more positively about my body.”
Dancing with the Stars continues on RTÉ One on Sunday at 6:30pm
