Jordan Dargan: “I had to work very hard to get here, but the job’s not finished”

Jordan Dargan is fighting to stay in Dancing with the Stars. He has been in the dance-off twice and with the quarter-final looming, The Apprentice star is eager to stay to the end.

It’s Orchestra Week and he’ll be performing to Harry Styles after previously dancing to One Direction, he jokingly tells VIP Magazine: “I think Rebecca is just requesting One Direction members at this point.”

Of course, we have to talk about the dance-offs, as he’s been in two out of three so far.

“It keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure!” he says with a laugh.

“The last thing you want is to get to the semifinal and be in your first one and be caught flatfooted. I know what to expect. It is the case in this competition that it doesn’t matter how good the dancing is, if you’re not getting the votes or you just haven’t been on your best that week, you could end up in a dance-off. You have to be prepared.

“Don’t get me wrong, nobody wants to be in the dance-off. It’s not nice having to send someone out home. It’s not nice giving your all and feeling like you haven’t done enough. But it’s an opportunity to show what you’re made of, to show your character, show your resilience.”

He adds: “This competition teaches you a lot about dancing, but it teaches you a lot about how to handle your mindset, going into things like this.”

However, it’s safe to say that he has been impressing the judges week after week as he got the first 10 of the season. Despite that, Jordan still doesn’t see himself as a dancer.

“I’m not a dancer. I’ve never really danced ever. To be there against the likes of Katelyn and Eric, who are phenomenal, I didn’t even think it would happen.

“Mentally, I was like, I’m going to do my best, and I’m gonna try and go as far as I can, but the reality is, I had to work very hard to get here. It does mean a lot that you know the hard work is paying off, but the job’s not finished, there’s still another three weeks. Hopefully, I get to see all three of them.”

But did he know he could dance? He has natural musicality that we can see every week. He laughs at this before saying: “No, is the honest answer.”

“I think there are some things that I attempt, and Rebecca’s like, ‘No, that’s not happening’. And there are other moves where she’s like, actually, there’s some natural ability there. It’s like a jigsaw. We’re finding bits and pieces that we can take to to build the picture that we want. Rebecca’s a miracle worker to get me to move the way I’ve been moving.”

Dancing with the Stars continues on Sunday at 6:30pm on RTÉ One
