Joanne Larby talks about judgement pregnant women face over bump size

Joanne Larby

The podcast host and influencer gave followers a pregnancy update on Instagram and talked about the importance of remembering everyone’s body is unique especially during pregnancy.

When a follower asked how she was doing Joanne said, “I’m feeling really good overall, but today is one of those bleugh pregnancy days. My morning sickness stopped around week 12 (thankfully), but I still get sick the odd time.

“Today it hit me and we had to pull over while I projectile vomited (onto my nice runners) on the side of the road in the torrential rain. I had a little cry and felt sorry for myself, then got over it,” she continued, not the nice shoes!

Another follower asked Joanne for guidance of when her bump starts to show, and Joanne had some excellent words of advice on this, saying, “I could never ever answer what bump to expect because it’s totally individual!!! There can be a huge interest and judgement surrounding showing or not showing; women commenting things like ‘oh you’re so neat’ or ‘you’re huge already’.

“Every single body and pregnancy is different – I am not a thin or petite person so I was never going to be flat until X week.I experienced a lot of bloating early on, plus even if your baby is the size of a cake in your belly, your uterus is much bigger your organs are moving, there’s fluid and all sorts of new changes I don’t even know enough about!

“I never look at a bump and think jaysus she’s huge, I think wow how beautiful. For me, I started to show around 12 weeks and it got more round and full around 16 weeks. My midwife always said to take bump pics or videos at night at it tends to be biggest and that’s definitely true for me, it changes dramatically throughout the day.”

Joanne announced her pregnancy in July by posting a sweet video with the caption, “The best secret I’ve ever had to keep. We’re over the moon and absolutely elated to be expecting our first little one.

“Sharing the past few months growing our angel in nature with only close family and friends in the know has been magic, but there’s no hiding this growing bump now!”
