Jamie Dornan has defended Fifty Shades Darker, after critics claimed the movie glamourises domestic violence.
The S&M fantasy adaptation was released to the general public yesterday, but it faced harsh criticism from some viewers, who were not happy with the portrayal of the relationship between protagonists Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
Following on from the first film Fifty Shades of Grey, the sequel shows sadistic Christian trying to entice cautious Ana Steele back into his life, but she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance.
The film contains graphic content of their S&M lifestyle, and this didn’t sit well with some women’s rights activists.
A number of campaigners protested outside the premiere in London, carrying placards that read: “Christian Grey is a rapist” and “50 Shades grooms women for abuse”.
Jamie has brushed off criticism of his latest film, saying he doesn’t see the problem with S&M, as long as it’s consensual.
“The biggest part of S&M is boundaries, having a safe word, that’s what that is. People only do it because they want to, nobody forces you into it,” he said.
“Some people like to be tied up and whipped, I don’t but lots of people do in the world, they love it and that is their right. It’s consensual and that should close that argument.”
Fifty Shades Darker is now being shown in cinemas nationwide.
