It’s the job on everyone’s lips as Michael D Higgins’ term as president will come to an end this year.

Several names have been bandied about.

Officially only Independent TD Catherine Connolly has been confirmed to run for president after Fine Gael candidate Mairead McGuinness withdrew on medical grounds.

Other names like Michael Flatley have been rumoured to run. And now we can add another name to that list.

Ryan Tubridy’s name has come up as someone who could potentially run as president. During his time as Late Late Show host, the rumours swirled.

Now people believe that his decision to pay RTÉ back €150,000 was the first step in clearing the slate and going onto the ballot.

However, Ryan himself may have something to say about this.

He cheekily wrote on social media over the weekend: “Two things I am not doing this weekend. 1. Going to Oasis and 2. Running for President.”

However, he will have some connection to this presidential race as he announced that he will be part of the celebrations for Michael D Higgins in September.

“What a pleasure to be invited to read a poem by President Higgins at the National Concert Hall on September 5th,” he wrote on social media with a picture with Michael D Higgins.

“It’s a celebration of his presidency and I’ll be one of many participants. I’ve always enjoyed my encounters with the president and look forward to being part of what promises to be a most enjoyable evening.”

He was met with comments urging him to run for president, including Kellie Harrington writing: “Ryan for President.”

“Please think about the presidency – we would love to have you and your soon to be wife in the Aras,” one fan wrote.

Another wrote: “Cmon Ryan, put your hat in the ring!”
