The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has unveiled its most spectacular season line-up in the theatre’s history, announcing 13 brand new productions to be added to an already sensational 2017 season.
Among them is a beloved Irish movie: Angela’s Ashes. Frank McCourt’s award-winning memoir will feature unforgettable songs and melodies, told with a rare lyricism and a warm inimitable sense of humour. Commenting on the announcement, producer Pat Moylan said: “I’m thrilled that Irish audiences will be the first to experience this enthralling musical version of Angela’s Ashes, before we take it to the world stage. I know that they are in for a very special evening of music and song featuring Frank McCourt’s iconic characters live onstage – a project that has been so close to my heart for a long time”.
Other musicals that audiences can look forward to are Sister Act, Hairspray, Blood Brothers, West Side Story and Dirty Dancing, all back by popular demand. There will also be the world premiere of Sleepless, an enchanting new romantic musical comedy based on the original story and screenplay of the movie classic Sleepless In Seattle.
Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Boublil and Schonberg’s legendary musical Miss Saigon will play for seven weeks across October and November, while theatre-goers will also be delighted to hear that musicals Evita, Crazy For You, Wonderland, Grease and The Adams Family are coming to Dublin.
There wil also be the hilarious The Wedding Singer, based on the hit Adam Sandler movie and starring Nadia Forde. Drama announced included The Play That Goes Wrong, which joins the previously announced Hamlet, Peter James’ Not Dead Enough, starring Laura Whitmore, and the return of the sensational National Theatre production of The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time.
More incredible productions already in the mix for 2017 are Million Dollar Quartet, starring Jason Donovan,The Kinks musical, Sunny Afternoon, and Funny Girl, starring Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice.
There will be performances by Moscow City Ballet with two of Tchaikovsky’s best-loved ballets Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, followed by a Moscow State Opera production of Carmen starring Ireland’s own Celine Byrne.
What’s more, there’ll be special events such as Unique Lives, a series of in depth interviews with four iconic speakers designed to motivate, challenge and inspire, featuring legends like Mia Farrow, Alexandra Cousteau and John Cleese.
Among the musicians playing at the theatre in 2017 are The Beach Boys, Kraftwerk 3D, The Diving Comedy and Tommy Fleming.
