Holly Carpenter has spoken out about the new ‘phenomenon’ that is the Ladyball, which is designed for a ‘lady’s game’. The model has penned a rant on the controversial product, saying she originally thought it was a joke – but she didn’t see the funny side.
“Any self-respecting woman would never stand for this,” she fumed.
Ladyball is a pink soft-touch football for a ‘woman’s grip’ and is being endorsed by Dublin GAA player Ger Brennan.
In her column with The Herald today, Holly stated that she finds it condescending and offensive to Irish women in sport.
“If this is genuine, then I am beyond shocked that anyone would think this condescending and patronising product is a good idea – it reminds me of those ads from the 1950s,” she said.
The self-confessed gym bunny also wrote in her column that we have very strong female athletes in Ireland including Katie Taylor and Stephanie Roche and we are not to be messed with. She wants to challenge the prejudice around women and sport: preach Holly!
“I’m a self-confessed “girly-girl” who wears pink gym gear, but I can still dead lift 65kg,” she said. “It’s about time we challenged prejudice and misconceptions about women and sport. We may be girly but we’re not soft”.
We couldn’t agree with her more.
