Dublin-born actor Michael Gambon has passed away at the age of 82.
The actor is best known for his role in the Harry Potter franchise as Professor Albus Dumbledore.
A statement on behalf of his wife and son reads: ‘We are devastated to announce the loss of Michael Gambon.
“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.
“We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
The Irish actor was born in Cabra in Dublin in 1940.
Over his career, which spanned six decades, he won three Olivier Awards, two Screen Actor Guild Awards and Four BAFTA Awards.
He began his career as one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre in London and went on to star in a number of Shakespeare plays.
