It’s been a long winter and between layers of jumpers and hot water bottles, we will all be glad to move into some warmer weather and lower heating bills. With the emergence of spring and summer comes a whole new freedom when it comes to your style. No longer dressing for the warmth, we can see the light and start to shed a few of those woollen jumpers and dress for style rather than the weather – well that is if the Irish weather allows it! Nevertheless, with rising temperatures (however slowly), comes Spring/Summer 2023 collections from designers all over the world and Brown Thomas showed the best of the best at their SS23 fashion show this month. Here is a round up of our favourite trends they were showcasing this year.

Short, Short Short

As spring emerges, so do our legs, which only calls for the shortest of short skirts. Long gone are midi hemlines in exchange for a more fun and flirty look, as seen on this year’s Brown Thomas runway. As Paris Hilton famously said “Skirts should be the size of a belt” and so they should. From Dries Van Noten to Mugler, this year’s runway collections have shown us that short skirts = more fun! So dig out your old mini skirt or even hike up the old reliable like you did when you were in school – it’s time to embrace your rebellious side with these barely-there hems.

Dark florals

We love a spring floral and this season we saw a twist on the runways, with darker colours being embraced. Just look to Erdem for some major moody floral inspo. Being one of the more wearable trends, dark florals are a great transition trend, allowing you to bridge the gap between winter and spring with easy and style. As the seasons change, try pairing a dark floral dress with tall black boots and layer with a dark knit for warmth. Shed the layers as we come into warmer months and pair with a strappy heel to boost your elegance and lighter makeup to balance out the moody tone.

Asymmetric Hemlines

A simple way to spice up your look is to play around with shapes and hemlines, which we saw in full force at LOEWE this season. Asymmetric hemlines give a really interesting look that moves against standard hemlines to create a surprising and intriguing fit. If you’re feeling a bit extra, play around with proportions and layering so as the hemline shines in contrast. Simple enough to make a splash in the wardrobe you have and effective enough to always get a double-take.

Bright Monochromes

If you’re trying to find a way to level up your party look, then adopt the monochrome look. Most of the time, we can associate monochrome looks with an all-black outfit, but this season step away from the little black dress. Embrace this season’s monochrome look by infusing bright, glorious colours like electric pink or calming blues.  Take some inspiration from Cecilie Bahnsen and opt for a loud summer colour head-to-toe for maximum impact.

Extravagance

Coming out of the pandemic misery, we are all delighted for the excitement that comes with restriction-free warmer months. This sentiment has clearly been mirrored on the runways, with designers embracing colour, shape and in-your-face fabulousness. After a tough winter we all need a bit of sunshine and opulence, so be a bit extra and embrace all your inner fabulousness! As RuPaul said “Stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out”.
