Gearóid Farrelly: “It’s great to see two men dancing on telly together”

Gearóid Farrelly may have thought that he wouldn’t be lasting too long on the dancefloor, but he’s number five on the Dancing with the Stars leaderboard.

He’s all smiles as VIP Magazine catch up with him, as he tells us: “It’s only been two weeks of people telling me I’m a good dancer. So I really don’t think I am.”

But he is killing it on the floor and we’re sure his Viennese Waltz with Stephen Vincent will be just as beautiful.

He confesses that his family were “surprised” by his decision to join the show and are even more surprised by his skills.

“Everyone’s surprised! I’m surprised too. I told my family on my birthday that I was doing the show and I was trying to video to get the reaction and they were all horrified. They were all like, ‘Gearóid, this isn’t a good idea!’,” he laughs.

While his family may be giving him a good old fashioned Irish slagging, he has been receiving beautiful comments from fans of the show.

“For the past two weeks, I’ve been getting a really good reaction that I’m still shocked by. But the reaction that I’m excited about the most are from people sending me emails that say, ‘I watched the tango and afterwards I told my parents I was gay.’,” he tells us.

“There’s been a switch for people. I got a great message from a gay couple that got married a few years ago who told me that they didn’t dance at their wedding because they were too self-conscious. It’s great to see two men dancing on telly together. I have to forget that it’s on telly to be able to do it!”

How sweet!

Dancing with the Stars continues on Sunday night at 6:30pm on RTÉ One
