The well known brand is set to close its doors in the UK and Ireland by the end of the year, while maintaining business online.
The retailer has had stores in Ireland since 2006 and in the UK since 1987.
According to The Irish Times, in a statement GAP said, “Due to market dynamics in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, we shared with our team today that we are proposing to close all company-operated Gap Specialty and Gap Outlet stores in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland in a phased manner from the end of August through the end of September 2021.”
Although we will no longer see a physical presence of the brand on our shopping trips, we will still be able to shop GAP online.
The statement also said, “In the United Kingdom and Europe, we are going to maintain our Gap online business. The e-commerce business continues to grow and we want to meet our customers where they are shopping.”
According to The Irish Times this closure will result in an estimated loss of over 1000 jobs.
Gap as said they will provide “support and transition assistance” to those workers impacted by the closures.
Sad to see them go!
