In the red? Four ways to treat skin redness

We all know that Irish skin has a proclivity to redness.

It just seems inevitable at this point. But we here at VIP Magazine feel like you don’t have to sit back and just let skin redness happen to you! You can tackle it head on.

We spoke to Michelle Macken, National Trainer for Ultraceuticals, about redness, photoaging and most importantly how to prevent and correct it.

So firstly, you might be asking what is photoaging?

Michelle Macken

Well, Michelle explains: “Photoaging is the premature ageing of your skin due to continuous exposure to UVA and UVB rays. The word photoaging really indicates that your skin is being aged through light. Did you know UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature ageing?

“UVA rays are present all year round! Even on a cloudy day. So, it is vital to wear a broad-spectrum SPF daily. Telangiectasia or broken capillaries on the face, Loss of elasticity, Skin redness and blotchiness are signs of photoaged skin.”

Yes, it’s simple but it’s true. Keep your SPF with you at all times!

So how can you prevent and correct photoaged skin?

Check out Michelle’s tips…

SPF

Wear a broad-spectrum SPF daily. A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. I would advise using a SPF 30 or SPF 50. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure evenly to the face and neck and reapply every 2 hours. Remember to reapply again after swimming or exercising. For additional physical protection, wear a brimmed hat and a long-sleeved top.

Corrective Serum

Choose an Alpha Hydroxy Acid Corrective Serum! Photoaged skin can often have textural issues and feel coarse. The Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Smoothing range contains a powerful blend of Alpha Hydroxy acids and Niacinamide to exfoliate, clarify and refine the skin’s surface.

Target redness

You’ll want to target facial redness and skin blotchiness. Mottled pigmentation, skin redness and blotchiness and uneven skin tone are all signs of photoaged skin. Opt for a targeted treatment moisturiser, try look out for a moisturiser that features Niacinamide and Ethyl Ascorbate, which help smooth and even out the complexion of your skin.

Chemical Peels

Book in for a Chemical peel – chemical peels are a great way to target skin texture and brighten your complexion. There are plenty of gorgeous treatments that feature brightening agents that help to resurface the skin and restore its clarity and luminosity. This is the perfect peel if you are concerned about uneven skin texture and tone.
