First look at Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley’s new film

Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley have been treading the boards for years now.

Now Paul will play yet another iconic role alongside the Kerry woman.

The Maynooth man will play William Shakespeare in an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s hit novel Hamnet.

Jessie will play his wife, Agnes, in the upcoming film which takes a look into the personal life of The Bard.

The trailer shows Paul walking across the stage in the iconic Globe Theatre. Other scenes see him working on his play while Jessie plays his supportive wife.

More clips show them spending time with their sons and sharing sweet moments together, humanising the master of words.

Hamnet is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book and the film adaptation is directed by Chloe Zhao. The story follows Agnes and William’s love story before and after the death of their son, Hamnet.


The synopsis reads: “ From Academy Award-winning writer/director Chloé Zhao, Hamnet tells the powerful love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.”

The film also stars Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn in the upcoming flick.

Hamnet hits cinemas on January 9th
