Last night saw Ireland’s Katie Taylor make history by becoming the undisputed lightweight champion of the world, following an impressive win over Belgian, Delfine Persoon.
The Bray woman, who won an Olympic Gold medal back in 2012, won the much anticipated fight in Madison Square Garden in New York City last night to claim every belt in her division – a historic achievement for the 32-year-old.
The fight was incredibly close, but Katie edged it on the judges vote in the end, making her the holder of the WBC belt to add to her collection.
“I probably should have boxed more on the outside,” she said after the fight. “It was a tight fight but I thought I did enough in the earlier rounds to shade it.
After the enthralling contest, Katie’s loyal fans, and some high profile figures, took to social media to share their delight at her achievement!
“My warmest congratulations to @KatieTaylor on reaching the pinnacle of achievement in her sport, becoming the undisputed lightweight world champion.”
