Aoibhín Garrihy has opened up about her impending big day, saying that the thoughts of an extravagant wedding would make her run a mile.

The actress got engaged to her beau of five years, John Burke, earlier in the summer, after he proposed in the sweetest way we’ve seen in a very long time.

John set the scene, whisking his bride-to-be away for a stroll along the cliffs of Moher – one of their favourite places to go – and enlisted the help of their dog, Rubie, as well as Aoibhín’s father.

Speaking exclusively to VIP about some of the finer details of the proposal, she said, “It was my birthday so he’d a day of activities organised and he told me to just wear a tracksuit and we’d bring the dog for a walk.

“He packed us a rucksack, and in it, which I wasn’t aware of at the time, was a bottle of Champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries – the whole lot.

“We pulled in off the trail and sat down in the grass, and he asked me to look at Rubie’s dog tag [which had the words, ‘marry me’ etched into it].

“What happened afterwards was a bit of a blur. He had my nana’s ring, which he got off my dad. I was very close to nana so it was very special.”

As the big day looms closer, the bride-to-be is enjoying the preparations, but doesn’t want to go over the top for the day itself.

“For some people, a massive, extravagant wedding is what they’ve always dreamed of, but I was never the person to think about their big day, their dream dress, their prince and the rest of it.

“I knew I wanted to get married, but the wedding part was never huge goal for me. Nowadays, people are expected to put this big production extravaganza together, and that would make me run a mile,” she said.

While the finer details of the wedding have yet to be sorted – such as the dress – the Fair City star can’t wait for her hen’s night.

‘I’m really looking forward to the hen party. I suppose we might try get as much mileage out of the hen as we can.

“John is threatening Vegas, so an eye for an eye and all that…”

That’ll certainly be fun!
