It looks like our favourite weather woman has decided to retire after 42 years.

Yes, Ireland’s number one weather lady, Evelyn Cusack has decided to hang up her umbrella after 42 years at Met Éireann.

One of the most recognisable faces to grace our tv screens, Evelyn Cusack’s career has been nothing short of spectacular. She joined our national forecaster 42 years ago before appearing on our tv screens just six years later – remaining there for a further 36 years!

Speaking in an interview with the Irish Times Evelyn described the early days in tv as the “worst of both worlds”.

She said: “I’d all the recognition and none of the money. But I loved it and it was an honour.”

She mentioned how thankful she was for the lack of social media when she first started on tv saying it avoided negativity and criticism towards them directly.

She said: “I’m glad there was no social media back then because we really didn’t have a clue what we were doing. We certainly didn’t have any training, but we survived.”

Evelyn excitedly chatted about 2017 and 2018, two of our worst years weatherwise with a number of severely damaging storms battering our little island – making them all the better for our weather people.

She said: “After that, I thought what more can possibly go wrong. Then I went to the National Ploughing Championships and had to warn of a big storm coming. We had no option but to tell them to shut it down. When the winds picked up, the place was almost flattened.”

So as her 40 year tenure comes to an end Evelyn reveals what her retirement plans are – a trip to the Galápagos Islands.

She had been planning this trip for a number of years, first mentioning it in 2019, and although she can’t travel that far without worrying about carbon emissions, it is sure to be the trip of a lifetime.

We wish you well Evelyn!
