Electric Picnic gives back to the community

It's much more than a weekend of music and fun.

Not only are the organisers of Electric Picnic providing us with an unreal festival an annual festival with a stellar line-up, but the organisers are also now giving back, and helping the general public of Stradbally.

Just weeks before the music and arts festival of the summer kicks off, Electric Picnic organisers have provided funds to help St. Colman’s National School purchase land that will benefit the entire community.

The two-acre site purchased by the festival heads will be used primarily by St. Colman’s National School during term time, then by clubs and teams throughout evenings and weekends.

Melvin Benn, Festival Director of Electric Picnic, spoke of the importance of giving back to the community, saying, “Our festival could not go ahead without the continued support of the community of Stradbally and surrounding areas, this donation is our small way of giving back and giving thanks.”

Principal of St. Colman’s, Cathal Ruane, commented on the news saying, “It is hard to describe how fantastic this new pitch area is going to be for our pupils, we have a huge tradition of sports and activities here in St. Colman’s but unfortunately we cannot give our pupils the opportunities they deserve.

“Electric Picnic is going to make a lasting contribution here in Stradbally; one that will be felt by many generations to come, we couldn’t be happier!”

The site in the centre of the village will be transformed into a state of the art all-weather pitch with running track, car-parking and a children’s play-area.

As more acts were added just last week to the festival’s line-up, the excitement for the gig is at an all-time high. With acts such as Lana Del Ray, The Heathers, LCD Sound system and Gavin James gracing the stage in Laois, ticket holders are in for a fantastic weekend!

Electric Picnic will take place from the 2nd-4th of September.
