Last night saw football analyst John Giles give his last offering of sporting knowledge, as he has now retired from his duties after 30 years.
John’s final analysis was on the closing game of the 2016 Euro championship, between Portugal and France, among his RTE panel of Darragh Moloney, Eamon Dunphy and Liam Brady.
The soccer pundit started his career in 1986 and has been a leading figure on the sporting scene ever since. Colleague and friend, Eamon Dunphy payed an emotional tribute to the footballing legend on the panel show yesterday.
“His greatness is due to his courage and his foresight and his wisdom.
“He was the hottest young manager in England and he walked away from the game because he didn’t like how it was run.
“He managed the Irish team, changed the culture over seven years. Brave, courageous foresight. It’s always been his hallmark. In the 30 years he’s sat in that chair, if any young kids out there are wondering, ‘who’s that guy?’, that guy is the greatest football man we’ve ever had.
“He’s a great. great friend to all of us, a joy to work with and a great, great figure in the history of Irish sport,” he said.
RTE Sport also shared a fitting tribute to John Giles, featuring some of the most memorable moments from his lengthy career.
You’ll be missed John.
