DIY SOS has moved even the toughest viewer to tears. It’s an emotional watch.
And this weekend was no different.
On Sunday night, the team headed to Athlone to meet firefighter, Patrick “Pa“ Berry.
In 2021, Pa suffered extensive injuries in the line of duty which left him seriously injured.
He has a long road to recovery still ahead of him after his near-death experience. During a house fire call, he was trapped under debris when a gable wall collapsed on him.
Pa suffered 11 fractured vertebrae, a broken collarbone, a broken shoulder blade, several broken ribs as well as breaking two bones in his lower leg, together with his ankle.
He also suffered swelling on the brain from the impact, as well as severe lacerations to his neck and tongue.
He underwent several procedures in hospital before he was sent to Esker Rí Nursing Home, outside Clara, Co Offaly, where he spent a month in recovery before finally getting back to his home in Assumption Road, Athlone, Co Westmeath.

However, when he returned home it was clear that he wouldn’t be able to return to his old room. Due to his injuries, he had to sleep in a hospital bed in the living room of his family home.
The DIY SOS team were called to create a home that was perfect for Pa and his needs as he continues his recovery.
Over nine days, the team completely renovated his home creating a new downstairs bedroom and bathroom along with modifications to both the entrance and rear of the property.
Viewers praised the incredible work the team had done for Pa and his family.
