Dervla Kirwan is an icon of Irish television – Ballykissangel, anyone!
In recent years, we’ve been enthralled with her in Smother.
And now we get to see her once again on our screens in Netflix’s House of Guinness.
Describing her character to VIP Magazine, she explains: “I play the wonderful Aunt Agnes on the show, who is a fictional character. She is determined to be sure that decorum, morals and virtues are upheld in the family.

“She has a very difficult job ahead of her because these young people have a completely different attitude to how she thinks they should conduct themselves and behave.”
We’re buzzing to watch this!
The show is highly anticipated as Stephen Knight’s follow up to Peaky Blinders and with a stacked Irish cast everyone is eager to tune in. And Dervla is feeling “blessed” to be a part of it at all.
“I’m amazed. I can’t believe I got the job. I’m so happy to see Ireland’s self-esteem grow. We have such talent in this country in all areas. And it’s time to bring our stories to the rest of the world.

“We live in a world now where on any streaming service, on any night of the week you can watch a show from Denmark or Norway or any country. It stops us from feeling so divided, it brings us together. It’s a shared humanity. It’s a universal story. And it’s so important to remind us of that in a time of great political unrest, that we’re all going through it together.”
The show itself is also full of political unrest, so how did Dervla decompress after an intense day on set?
“I used to go for a swim or go for a walk and count my blessings. That’s the truth of it. I never thought I would have such an interesting career. And this has been a curveball thrown at me and it’s an absolute blessing. I’m so delighted to be part of it.”
House of Guinness starts streaming on Netflix on September 25th
