Derry Girls fans may have been sad to see the second series come to an end, but a new season has been confirmed.

The final episode of season two aired on Tuesday night and was a huge hit with viewers, but just as the credits rolled Channel 4 announced the a third season has the go-ahead.

Taking to twitter, the broadcaster said: “That might be the end for series 2 of #DerryGirls, but don’t worry it will be returning for series 3!”

Nicola Coughlan who plays Claire on the show, took to Twitter to share her excitement.

She added: ” I can’t tell you how grateful I am to be part of this gang. Thank you Lisa for writing such an incredible script. Thank you to our brilliant crew & team who are so passionate. Thank you to everyone who’s watched & supported us so strongly from the very beginning
So, so grateful.”

A date has not yet been confirmed for season three, but we’re hoping it’ll be soon.

With series one having aired in January 2018, and series two in March 2019, let’s hope it’ll be less than a year before we see the girls – and the wee English fella – back on our screens.
