Danielle Galligan

Danielle Galligan is no stranger to playing a strong women on screen.

The Dublin woman got her big break in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone series that left book fans devastated by its untimely cancellation, and she went on to appear in RTÉ’s Kin and Obituary as two equally fiery characters.

She’s set to appear in Marian Keyes’ adaptation, The Walsh Sisters that will air later this month. But we’ll see her on our screens next as Lady Olivia in Netflix’s House of Guinness.

She beams ear to ear as she tells VIP Magazine about her character, describing her “without spoilers”, she says: “For Lady Olivia, she undergoes a journey in the show that a lot of Irish women have had to make.

“I was there for marches and I was there handing out flyers so for me that was the main thing, to make sure that those women were seen and taken care of. That’s what I’m most looking forward to.”

She enthuses about the show: “The time period this is set in is very spicy, there was a lot of social unrest and political progress. Ireland was only 20 years old.”

Of course, a lot of time and effort went into making sure the show was as historically accurate as possible, she tells us: “We were really lucky because our director studied Irish history in school. And he was really knowledgeable. When I watched the show you can see how they’ve shown Irish society with integrity and dignity.”

This is an Irish story told by Irish actors and she is “bursting with pride” to be a part of the cast.

“My auntie text me when I was cast saying ‘Oh my God, this is all the things you love.’ I love Stephen Knight. I love Taboo, I love Peakys. I used to have a picture of Helen McCrory on my wall.

“Guinness was my main source of iron in my twenties, let’s just say. Irish history as well, I did my Leaving Cert project on Padraig Pearse and the IRB. I’m really, really proud and I’m very, very blessed.”
