Caitríona Balfe has admitted she will be heartbroken when her hit drama series Outlander comes to an end.
The actress has starred Claire Fraser for nearly tens years on the historical drama and has shared how hard it will be to say goodbye when the show ends after its eighth season, next year.
Speaking with RTÉ, the actress explained: “It’s going to be very sad, very bittersweet. It’s had an amazing run and it will be more than a decade by the time it’s finished, which is an incredible length of time to spend as a character on a show and I will be bereft of spending that time with Claire.”
“I think I’ve become institutionalised, so used to being told where to go and what to do by my Outlander family. But I also think it’s time for new challenges hopefully on the horizon. But it will be bittersweet for sure.”
The Monaghan native announced the show would be ending in January.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Caitríona told fans: “We have BIG news. Bittersweet but also very exciting that we get to continue this journey for an 8th and final season.”
Sharing her gratitude at the opportunity to portray Claire, the actress wrote: “It’s been a gift beyond my wildest dreams … brought me friendships for life, stretched me as an actor and a person and now we get to give you back one more season and finish it right for all you amazing fans. Thank you for being with us on this magical journey.”
But it won’t be the last we see of Caitríona as the star is heading back to the silver screen and we cannot wait!
The actress has announced her next role following the success of her last film, the Academy Award winning, Belfast. This time, she is set to take on a new challenge as she joins the star-studded cast of upcoming thriller, Amateur.
The Monaghan native will be starring alongside Mr. Robots’ Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and John Wick star, Laurence Fishburne.
Caitríona announced the news on Instagram, and shared her excitement at joining the project. Saying: “Very excited to be joining this amazing cast!! This is going to be a fun one.”
