Katie Taylor has suffered a devastating defeat at the Rio Olympic games.
The Bray native’s highly anticipated quarter final match started at three o’clock and ended just minutes later following a quick defeat at the hands of Finland’s Mira Potkonen.
The Irish boxing champ was the bookies favourite to win the match but the odds weren’t in her favour once she got into the boxing ring.
She told RTE television, “It’s very disappointing. It’s been a very, very tough year. A lot of losses this year and it’s very hard to take. I just have to thank everyone for their support.”
The 30-year-old was the last of the last of the Irish boxers to compete at the Olympics and it was hoped she could make up for the lack of medals brought home this year – but it wasn’t to be!
Hard luck, Katie!
