Saoirse Ronan has added Broadway success to her already very impressive C.V.
The Irish actress recently stole the show at the Oscars, where she was nominated for Best Actress in Brooklyn, and now she’s become a hit on stage.
The Co. Carlow native’s new play The Crucible has already taken in half-a-million euro – before it has even opened.
The play begins on March 31, but the first six previews have already generated sales of just under €500,000, leaving the cast and crew pretty confident about the 20-week-run.
Saoirse (21) made her debut last Tuesday during the preview, which is said to have been a huge boost in terms of sales.
She plays villain Abigail Williams in the tale about the Salem witch trials, set in the 1600s, and will be acting opposite fellow Irish actor Ciaran Hinds, as well as Ben Whishaw and Tony winner Sophie Okonedo.
The Atonement star previously spoke out about her Broadway debut, admitting she was ‘terrifed’ and was feeling the pressure.
“It’s The Crucible – no pressure!” she told Pat Kenny on Newstalk. “A journalist asked me when I was away, ‘Have you started thinking about The Crucible?’ and I haven’t thought about anything else but the play for the last year-and-a-half.”
She added: “It’s completely new territory for me. I didn’t ever train. I’ve never done a play before, apart from playing a tree in a school play when I was six. I felt like I did a good job. I represented that tree!”
