Alicia Vikander is opening up about suffering a miscarriage before welcoming her first child.
Alicia give birth to her, and husband Michael Fassbender’s first child in 2021, but the actress revealed to The Times that their journey to parenthood wasn’t easy, and she had tragically lost a baby before welcoming their little one.
Alicia’s latest role, in Sky Atlantic’s Irma Vep, follows a singer as she returns to work after suffering a miscarriage and the Swedish star confessed she related to the role.
Saying: “We have a child now, but it took us time.”
Alicia also shared how she was reminded of The Light Between Oceans. The 2016 film she worked on with Michael where they played a couple struggling to start a family, who adopt a baby found at sea.
Saying: “[The miscarriage] was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film [The Light Between Oceans]. That film has another meaning now.”
Sharing how difficult it was to process her grief, while also being in the public eye, the actress explained: “Sometimes you go through things that are tough in life and if you have an office job you can step away for a bit. But there are times that myself or colleagues have been through something and, well, I can’t understand how they went on to the red carpet afterwards.
“To be met by people asking, ‘How are you doing?’ Given what they had just been through? Most people would not be able to step out of their house.”
Alicia and Michael married in Ibiza back in 2017.
Since then, the couple have been living in Lisbon, Portugal and in a rare interview Alicia spoke about how much they love it there.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Alicia spoke about living in Lisbon during the pandemic: “The wonderful thing for me is being able to stop working and being at home with my husband and making sure my family is good.”
