Yesterday it was announced that Al Porter would be getting his own lunchtime show on Today FM. It was previously reported that the IFTA winner was set for 2FM, but he’s now spoken out about his decision.
Following the success of Al’s radio programme on 2FM with Colm Hayes in 2016, the 23-year-old was in talks to have his own show on the national broadcaster, however, it never transpired.
Speaking to the Irish Daily Star the Tallaght native said, “Last year I was willing and ready to be able to make something happen with 2FM but it just didn’t happen. It was just a bit up in the air.
“I dont think I’m being mean to Dan Healy (head of 2FM), he’s a nice fellow, but he would even agree that 2FM is trying to rebrand itself.
“And it’s like, ‘where do I fit into that?’ Colm (Hayes) and I had a great show on 2FM and we only went up in the JNLRs.”
Former RTE veteran Colm, who left the station last summer, said that this is a massive loss to the broadcaster and a mistake that they shouldn’t have made.
“RTE’s loss and Today FM’s gain. It’s typical of RTE. They had the talent in their hands and they’ve lost it.
“When I stepped down from 2FM I knew they just couldn’t work out what to do with Al, which is a real shame because they had a huge talent on their hands,” he said.
