10 minutes with… presenter and podcaster, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin

Doireann Ní Ghlacáin Pic: Brian McEvoy

From her favourite show to her guilty pleasure, her proudest moment to her most embarrassing one, here, we spend ten minutes with TG4 presenter and How to Gael podcaster, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, to get to know her a little better!

What’s on your tv series link?
My guilty pleasure is, And Just Like That, the series.

What’s your takeaway of choice?
You can’t beat a pizza! And I’m a big advocate of pineapple – I won’t hear a word against it!

Who’s your broadcasting hero?
The late, great Tony McMahon. He captured Ireland at a certain time and he’s responsible for about 99 per cent of the videos on my YouTube favourites section.

Is there a question you hate being asked?
‘What are you working on at the moment?’ I work freelance and so rarely have a day off. I’m always thinking about the next gig so when I have some downtime I hate talking about work!

What’s been your most embarrassing moment on air or in public?
While broadcasting live from Mullingar last year I got chatting to members of the audience. I asked one person their name only to realise that he was an old family friend I hadn’t recognised because he’d grown up so much during covid. A major faux pas but he took it well. I was mortified!

Is there a motto or piece of advice that you live by?
‘Níl in aon rud ach seal’ which has the same sentiments as nothing lasts forever or this too shall pass. Great to put the highs and the lows into perspective!

Tell us a secret about yourself.
It’s one of the great tragedies of my life that I am allergic to the tannins in tea. I only found out in the last year and so now I am strictly a herbal tea drinker.

What’s your ideal date?
A creamy pint of Guinness and a good chat!

What’s been your proudest moment so far?
I’m not one to place value on achievements or big goals. They’re great of course, but ultimately, they’re fleeting and I try not to tie too much of my self-worth to them. I meditate most days and try to have a very open and compassionate outlook towards other people. I think I’m most proud of the development I see in my own day-to-day thinking and the positivity, peace and patience I have cultivated in myself.
