RTE have announced that they will be airing a documentary on the Belfast rape trial later on this week.

The documentary, named Acquitted: The Rugby Rape Trial, will focus on the 9 week trial of former Ulster and Ireland rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding, as well as their friends Rory Harrison and Blaine McIlroy.

The four men were accused of a number of charges, including rape, sexual assault, exposure and perverting the course of justice, of which they were each found not guilty.

The trial, which took place back in February and March of this year, garnered huge attention throughout Ireland and the rugby community worldwide, with the not guilty verdicts sparking protests on the issue of consent in Ireland.

Paddy Jackson, who along with Stuart Olding had his contracts with the IRFU ended following the trial, said in a statement that he was “ ashamed that a young woman who was a visitor to my home left in a distressed state.

“This was never my intention and I will always regret the events of that evening.”

Acquitted will air on RTE, this Thursday July 19th at 10:15pm. Will you be watching?
