We have all been there. You are just after creating a masterpiece of a makeup look. You’re feeling yourself and are ready to take on the day.

Fast-forward two hours, and you look in the mirror and wonder if you somehow completely, unbeknownst to yourself, removed all of your makeup. Where does it all go?

Did you know that there are so many tips and tricks to make sure your makeup lasts all day?

First of all, let’s make sure we have each step in the right order.

  • Base
  • Primer
  • Layering
  • Powder
  • Setting spray

This order of steps is sure to make your makeup last as long as possible.

Base

Skincare is one of the most essential steps to ensure your makeup looks great and lasts all day. After all, it’s easy to polish a diamond! Cleansing your face, exfoliating one to two times a week and moisturising accordingly can go a long way.

This means your makeup is being applied to skin that is clean, hydrated and free from any dead skin cells. This will prevent makeup from flaking off throughout the day. Always use moisture at least five minutes before you begin your makeup to allow it to sink into the skin.

Primer

Primer is essentially creating a canvas on your skin to prepare for the other products to be applied. Choose a primer that suits your skin.

For example, people with oily skin might find a silicon-based mattifying primer works for them as it will control their oils. On the other hand, people with dryer skin may opt for a glowy primer. Primer tends to have a sticky, tacky consistency, allowing later products to stick to the skin. Almost like glue.

Layering

Whether you are going for a full-coverage glam or a soft everyday look, it is always worth taking the time to build up your makeup in thin layers and add more as you go. This will provide optimised longevity on the skin and give your makeup a less cakey finish.

Powder

Powder is one of the most essential parts of the setting process of your makeup look. Powder can be found as a compact or as a loose powder. Sometimes they have coverage but they can also be found in a translucent form. There are many techniques to set the skin. If you have extremely oily skin, you might want to try out the baking method.

This consists of applying a thick layer of loose powder over your liquid products, letting it sit for five minutes while you finish your look and then wiping it away with a brush. If you are on the dryer side, you may want to just add a light dusting with a fluffy brush in the areas where you need it.

A great and affordable pressed powder is the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder. In terms of loose, we adore the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, a real cult favourite!

Setting Spray

Setting spray allows you to lock in your entire makeup look. This will add serious lasting power to your makeup. If you prefer a glowy makeup look, you might like to go in with a shimmery setting spray to bring back the glow you lost when you used your powder.

Setting spray melts all your makeup together to create a seamless look on the skin. We adore the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, it’s a classic!
