What’s the deal with dry brushing and should you be doing it?

Dry brushing might sound like something your mam did in the ‘90s, the kind of thing that sat beside the bath next to a pot of body butter and a loofah.

But thanks to wellness TikTok and a wave of influencers showing off post-shower glow ups, this simple ritual is making a major comeback. And we get it. With promises of smoother skin, better circulation, and even lymphatic drainage, dry brushing is the kind of low-cost habit that looks and feels a bit luxe, without the expensive spa appointment.

But does it actually do anything? Let’s break it down.

What exactly is dry brushing?

It’s exactly what it sounds like: brushing your dry skin before showering with a firm, natural bristle brush. The method is pretty simple. Start at your feet and brush upward in long, sweeping strokes toward your heart. This direction is thought to support your lymphatic flow, which plays a role in your body’s natural detox process.

It’s simple, quick, and weirdly satisfying once you get into it. Think of it as a mini spa treatment you can do in your own bathroom.

What are the supposed benefits?

  • Exfoliation: The bristles help slough off dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling noticeably softer and smoother.
  • Boosts circulation: That slightly tingly, rosy glow post-brush? That’s increased blood flow to the surface of the skin.
  • Lymphatic drainage: While not medically proven, many fans swear dry brushing helps reduce puffiness and fluid retention.
  • Energising: The invigorating effect of brushing can give you a mini morning wake-up boost — kind of like a double espresso for your skin.

Is it actually worth it?

Some of the benefits, like exfoliation and that healthy glow are definitely real. Claims about reducing cellulite or “detoxing” the body are a little more wishful, with limited scientific backing. That said, for something that takes five minutes and costs between €10 – €20 (depending on how boujee you want to feel)? It’s a feel-good ritual that fits right into your wellness girlie routine, no ice baths required.

How to do it and what you’ll need:

Use a natural bristle brush, you can find them easily on Amazon, Boots, or Avoca. Before your shower, brush your dry skin starting at your ankles and moving upwards using long, firm strokes toward your heart. Don’t press too hard! It should feel stimulating, not scratchy. After your shower, apply a moisturiser or body oil to lock in hydration and keep your skin glowing.
