What is retinol? And what products should we be using?

Retinol – the one skincare product that’s almost too complicated to know where to start.

Okay, we admit, there is a bit to learn before you get started with this seriously beneficial product. But don’t worry, we have got you covered and the results couldn’t be more worth it.

Retinol is an active skincare ingredient and one of the most effective products on the market. Some of its many benefits include anti-ageing properties, protection against environmental damage and the renewal of the skin’s natural cells.

When we are younger, our skin tends to do this naturally quite quickly, however, as we age the renewal of skin cells slows down. The product can also help treat acne and improve the texture of the skin.

So, how do you find the correct retinoid for your skin type?

It’s important to note that it is an irritant and you have to start slow and figure out what works best for you. Everyone’s skin is very different and has different levels of sensitivity. For anyone new to retinol your best bet is a cream, which can be found over the counter. This will allow you to begin with a lower amount of the active ingredient.

If your skin is used to retinol and you have built up a tolerance to the ingredient, you could switch to a more concentrated form. This may have to be bought through a prescription.

Start by using a pea-sized amount of retinol once a week in the evenings. After several weeks, use it twice a week. Slowly build this up to every second day and then eventually you can use it once a day. However, it is super important to keep this process slow and steady and allow your skin to adjust accordingly.

One thing to remember when beginning your retinol journey is to always apply it to completely dry skin. Damp skin allows products to sink into the skin quickly. This is not what you want when you start using retinol as it will irritate the skin. Only use retinol at night and make sure to wear SPF every single day as you may be more prone to burning.

Who should use retinol?

Anyone suffering from acne-prone skin or unwanted texture will benefit from this active ingredient. For the anti-ageing benefits, you could begin as early as your mid-twenties. Not that you need it, of course, but just if you want to get ahead of the game!

Remember to stay consistent. The results may not be overnight, however, your future self will thank you for sticking out this routine.
