Vicky Phelan has shared a birthday tribute to her daughter, who turns sixteen today. The cervical check campaigner is back in the US as she is there for an experimental drug trial in the hopes it will prolong her life.
After a brief stint at home this summer Vicky shared how difficult it was to head back to America, and that’s even more true on special days like today.
Posting to social media she said; “Like with Darragh’s birthday in February, this is the first of Amelia’s birthdays that I have not been at home for. It hurts.”
Continuing she shared that she plans to be back in Ireland for her children’s birthdays going forward as she is currently considering if she will continue her stay in the US; “I won’t miss another birthday because of treatment.”
“That is something that I am no longer willing to sacrifice. These moments and occasions are too precious. So, Amelia, I wish you the happiest of 16th birthdays. You can fleece me for whatever you want when I come home.”
Although the mother-of-two initially told family and friends she would only be going to the US for a period of six months, she will actually be there for a year.
Revealing recently why she never told them it would be a year she said; “I lied for myself as well as everyone else. I think saying goodbye to everyone for 12 months in January would have been to hard, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”
“I decided I’d tell everyone I was only coming for six months and then when I got here, break the news.”
We are wishing Vicky the best of luck with her treatment and hope to see her back on Irish soil very soon.
