Vicky Phelan has shared a health update with her followers after making a return to social media this week. The cervical health check campaigner posted some lovely snaps of a day out with her mother and godmother, where they visited Adare Manor for afternoon tea.
Captioning the post she said; “I’m BACK! For now anyway….I am finally back walking on my own two feet for more than a few feet without having to use a four wheel or three wheel mobility aid and, oh boy, does it feel good.”
“My back is still not great and I can only walk very short distances and am still in pain BUT it is manageable AND I can get out of the house.”
Continuing Vicki shared that two weeks beforehand she wouldn’t have thought she’d be able for the trip out; “I honestly thought it would never happen BUT the human body and the human spirit are AMAZING things.”
This coming weekend is Charlie’s Climb, which will see RTE broadcaster Charlie Bird joined by some other well known faces as they hike Croagh Patrick on Saturday. All funds raised from the event will go towards raising vital funds for Motor Neurone Disease and Pieta House.
Vicky and Charlie struck up a friendship after his emotional appearance on the Late Late Show last year where he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. She reached out to him to commend his brave words and had planned to join his fundraiser, Climb with Charlie alongside Ryan Tubridy and Daniel O’Donnell, but recently shared that she would have to pull out due to ill health.
The cervical health check campaigner shared how disappointed she was not to be able to take part in the climb, but that recent cancer treatment has been difficult and she needs time to rest and recover; “I have had to make the hard decision NOT to make the journey to Croagh Patrick in April for the #climbwithcharlie I am simply not well enough either physically or mentally. The past few weeks have really knocked the stuffing out of me and I need to focus on just getting well again.”
“I have already been in touch with Charlie and he has been great about it,” she added.
We are wishing Charlie all the best with his climb at the weekend!
